Join us for a 6-week guided tour where we’ll demystify the grant writing process so that you can confidently apply for the money you need to make your dream projects happen.

During this course, you will prepare a REAL GRANT APPLICATION, PLUS we'll set you up to apply, over and over, without having to start from square one each time.

We're total word nerds. We LOVE wielding words in powerful ways to drive social betterment.

Here's what we know... 

Grant applications are a lot like fishing. You cast out a line, hoping that your bait will draw interest and snag a firm bite. You would prefer to reel in a hefty catch that will nourish you for some time, rather than have to catch a host of small fries that barely sustain you.  


For all the work you put in, you hope to get something out of it. We offer our course to make the work easier and the promise of a plump catch more likely. We believe in teaching people how to fish, so that they may nourish themselves.


We have a combined 30 years of experience casting lines in funding pools, having many of them nibbled, spit out, and snapped. Along the way, we have picked up essential skills and strategies for drawing in those grants hook, line, and sinker.

Module 1: Orientation 

  • Know what to expect from the course during and between each weekly session
  • Know how to best utilize the benefits you’ll receive during the course

Module 2: Understanding Grants

  • Know where to look for grants 
  • Define a grant and how it differs from other kinds of funding 
  • Prepare a workback schedule to keep your grant applications on track

Module 3: Doing Your Research

  • Understand how doing your research will strengthen your idea and your application 
  • Answer the existential questions behind your application—why you and yours? 
  • Draw upon helpful English composition guidelines and tactics for writing well 
  • Create a logic model that lays out the recipe for your idea

Module 4: Preparing the Common Elements of a Grant Application

  • Understand the common elements of an application 
  • Anticipate the standard application questions asked in most funding calls 
  • Draft a living shell of a proposal that can be used for any number of grant applications

Module 5: Peer Review / Feedback

  • Acknowledge your own limited perspective and how it can affect your writing 
  • Identify the benefits of having others review your application in advance 
  • Know who and how to ask for feedback

Module 6: Learning from Unsuccess

  • Learn how to be receptive to constructive criticism and how you can use it to strengthen your application 
  • Revisit your work throughout this course and reflect on what you learned

  • Can I find funding to attend or have an employee attend this training?
    Yes! In Canada, many provinces and territories have partnerships with the federal government to fund employee training opportunities. Search “Canada-(your province/territory) Job Grant” to see if you have access to this funding and whether our course meets their requirements. We are happy to work with you to submit an application.
  • Are there any prerequisites for this course?
    Yes, there are two prerequisites:
    You are Legit: You are a member of a registered business, non-profit organization, and/or are a student or faculty member at a post-secondary institution
    You have an Idea: You have at least a vague idea for a new activity, program, and/or research project for which you are seeking funding. NOTE: You do not need to have a fully formed plan and, it’s actually better if your idea remains flexible.
  • How many hours will it take to complete this course?
    The course is about 30 hours in length spread over 6 weeks.
    Each week includes:
    1 hour of synchronous instruction and discussion
    3 hours of independent activities and worksheet completion
    1 hour of group chat check-ins in between each instructional session
  • Will I receive recognition for having completed this course?
    Yes, we provide a certificate to each trainee who has completed the requirements of this course.
  • What kind of grants could I get for my small business?
    Keep in mind, grants often fund NEW activities or GROWTH within your company. You aren’t likely to get funding for operational costs (like renting a space or paying utility bills). However, we can help you figure out which funding priorities align with your idea(s) and how to determine which grants are your best bet.
  • I have a small sole proprietorship that earns less than $20K/year, would I still be eligible for grant funding?
    Funding opportunities for businesses making less than $30K/year are quite limited; however, it doesn’t hurt to learn about the grant writing process if you plan to grow your business income. Many grant writing skills are transferable to other types of proposals (such Expressions of Interest [EOIs] or for responding to Requests for Proposals [RFPs]).
  • Is this open to people outside of Canada?
    Yes! If you are in the US, this course is relevant, as are some of the grant search tools.
